Gunbarrel Trails

On March 6, 2003, the Boulder County Regional Trails Committee met to decide the
priorities for trail construction in Boulder County. This committee consists of the
alternate transportation coordinators for the County and all the cities in the County.
Their priorities can be found on the Boulder County web site, search under Transportation,
and click on the Alternatate Modes - Regional Trail Systems. These priorities were
endorsed by the Boulder County Commissioners in April, 2003.
The good news for Gunbarrel is that the completion of the trails from the City of
Boulder, through Gunbarrel, to Niwot received a top priority designation. Completion of
this trail requires the construction of the following four trail segments:
- From the north end of the Cottonwood Trail on Jay Road just east of the Diagonal to
the west end of the Willows Trail in the Orchard Creek subdivision south of Celestial
Seasonings including an improved crossing and curb cuts at Spine Road;
- From the Twin Lakes Trail network to Lookout Road near the Mockingbird Restaurant
site;
- From Lookout Road near the Mockingbird Restaurant site to the west end of the
Cottontail Trail north of the Gunbarrel North subdivision; and
- From the east end of the Cottontail Trail at the northeast corner of the Gunbarrel
Estates subdivision to the Niwot trail system.
Candidate alignments for each of these four segments are under consideration. After the
alignments are finalized, the construction of these segments will require the permission
of private property owners, coordination among the various municipalities (Boulder County,
City of Boulder, etc.), and decisions regarding the trail surface. While all these details
are still in the formulation stage, current plans call for the completion of the Gunbarrel
to Niwot link (items 3 and 4 above) before the end of 2006.
